Hello everyone!
Well, Battle of the Books has come to an end. I want to thank all parents for their support. Grade 4 (and 5) had a lot of fun and were introduced to some great reading. I know that perhaps they did not get the results they wanted in terms of wins, but the games were close and they demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout. Well done, CDS!! Please see the Photos tab for some pictures. Also much thanks to coaches, timers, and of course Ms. Choo, without whom BOB would not be possible. This week we will have another 4 day week for the kiddos but then on Friday we will be having Parent-Teacher Conferences. I urge all parents to come see me and the specialist teachers. You may sign up at the FP Weebly site. Click here. I have alloted 20 minute blocks, but we will try to conduct our interviews within 15 minutes. Students are free to join as well. I look forward to seeing you on Friday! Have a great week! - Mr. Baker -

Hello everyone!
We had a great week enjoying Book Week and all its activities. A big thank you to Ms. Choo, as well as to our guest author, Mr. Bryn Barnard. Also, thank you to all students who brought in a variety of books for book swap! Character day saw a number of creative costumes as well! And thank you also extended to parents who came to read as well as those Well, we have a week off coming up and I want Grade 4 students to focus on reading their Battle of the Books books. Please ensure that students are spending at least an hour a day reading/rereading their expert books. Have a great weekend and enjoy the break! - Mr. Baker - Hello everyone!
We had a busy week here in Grade 4 and in FP in general. Our trip to Job World was a smashing success as students ran about exploring and experiencing as much as they could. See pictures in the photos tab! Thursday and Friday we visited the Book Fair. I'm so thankful for the parent support - not only for the delicious snacks, but also for supporting a love of learning. My heart soared for those students carrying bags of books and excitedly flipping pages and sharing purchases with friends! IT was fantastic! Academically, we explored a few themes this week as well. We began to study fractions in Math while in Science we talked about life and cells as well as thought about the life and contributions of Stephen Hawking. In Writing we took some time to look at grammar and syntax while in Reading we began our book study on Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Next week in Social Studies we will be looking at the variety of religions found in Korea and their effect on Korean culture. Also next week we will be having Book Week! Yay! Here is break down! Monday - Global Readers to World Leaders - Parents read to students in their mother tongue! Tuesday - Students read to pets! Wednesday - Book Character Day - Students may dress up as a book character of their choice (from a book they've read!) Thursday - Author Visit Day with Bryn Barnard Friday - Book Swap!* (Grade 4 will be running this one!) *Students are asked to bring in books they no longer want to swap! English or Korean! I hope you all have a great weekend!! - Mr. Baker Hello everyone!
This week moved pretty quickly as we were busy from the start. We had a great assembly on Tuesday - I think it was one of our best! I'm quite proud of the 4s for their hard work to help organize and work throughout the assembly. Wonderful, ladies and gentlemen! Also, congratulations to our award winners. This week saw another Grade 4 tradition with the Grade 4 store - see photos tab for pics! - This one went smoothly and for that we must not only thank the students' hard work, but also parents. Thank you so much for preparing such delicious food that was appreciated by the FP and the whole CDS communities. Hungry high school students happily devoured most of it, while teachers wished they had extra space in their bellies. Thank you! I must also thank Mr. Hill and Principal Shim who helped out with serving and making sure everyone was happy. I love my CDS family! Now the week is coming to a close and it is time to get ready for next week. Next week we will be having our field trip to Job World! On Tuesday, please ensure to send students with a packed lunch, water, and a healthy snack. Students must all wear their Khaki pants, white polo shirts, and either Dalton hoodie or Cardigan. After-School programs will happen after we get back. It will be a long bus ride, so for those students with sensitive bellies, I recommend a light breakfast. On Thursday and Friday we will be having a Book Fair. Like last time, I will bring students over to see what books are available and which are of interest. They will create a list and check back with parents on Thursday night to get permission and money to buy on Friday. If you have another arrangement - that is fine. My only requirement is that you let your kids buy lots of books! :) During the following week we will have Book Week. Grade 4 will be responsible for the Book Swap. We will be asking all CDS FP students to bring in books they are willing to swap. For each book a student brings, they will get a ticket to use to take another book. Both Korean and English books are fine to bring in. So feel free to do some spring cleaning and send in any books you think are taking up too much space on the shelves. Thank you! I hope you all have a great weekend!! - Mr. Baker - Hello everyone,
Last week was a short one. We mostly spent time completing Term 3 projects and getting portfolios up. While the portfolios are available for view - not all of the feedback has been given. I will get that done throughout the week. To start Term 4, we are welcoming our new student - Dave Shin! Welcome, Dave! Our students are very excited to meet you on Monday morning. On Tuesday we will have our FP Assembly! You are welcome to join us. It begins at 9:15. On Thursday we will have our Grade 4 store. I hope you have all heard about this from your kids! You'll be sending them in with toys, stationary, and goodies for sale to raise money for Child Fund. On Thursday, we will also start our PE swimming for Term 4. They will swim during the final two blocks of Thursdays - please send students with their swimming gear. Have a great week! - Mr. Baker Hello everyone!
I hope you had a great New Year's break as well as a great week back! This week we had another busy week in Grade 4! From coding with Mr. Bray (see the photo tab!) as well as conducting science experiments as glaciologists, working on our long division using the partial-quotients method (see Math Video tab), finishing up our writing assignments on the American Revolution in Reading and Writing, and planning our Grade 4 store in Social Studies, students are probably up for a weekend of naps. Next week, we will have a short one. Only three days as students are off on Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the weekend! Mr. Baker Hello everyone!
First of all, I want to thank all of you who joined us at our successful Library Day on Thursday. What a great time! I wish everyday could be library day...but I would probably lose my voice. :) I will post some pictures in the Photos tab. This week students took a science test as well as participated in a hard-fought battle of jeoparbee. I'm delighted with how well students prepared for the day - taking the game seriously, but also sharing their joy and encouragement of their friends. So proud! Next week we will having our MAP testing - please prepare for these days - Tuesday - Thursday by ensuring students have a proper sleep and healthy breakfasts. There is no other preparation necessary. Next week on the 9th we will also have UFF. Please don't forget to wear your own clothes and bring 1,000 won for charity. Have a great weekend! Happy Friday to everyone!
I hope you had a great week despite this awful cold. We have kept the classroom nice and hot and recess inside. Thank you for sending well bundled kids who have been super positive and hardworking in class this week! Students have finished their social studies based essays while beginning to plan for our Grade 4 store. In reading and writing, students have enhanced their research abilities through library searches and book selection. In science we have finished off our unit on shaping the Earth - test next week on Wednesday! Finally in Math we have been exploring exponents. All great fun! Next week we will have our first of two jeoparbee days for the year. On Tuesday, students will be testing their knowledge of what they have studied so far in Grade 4. Students should prepare by reviewing the vocabulary words they have been given. You can do it! Also, don't forget about Library Day on Thursday! It's going to be an event filled week. Yay! Mr. Baker Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a great week! I know we did in Grade 4. We have been quite productive throughout. Students have dived into the American Revolution asking more and more questions each day. I'm delighted with how their interest in studying history is evident in their queries and their faces. Thank you Grade 4!! In Math we have been tackling double digit multiplication using the partial products method. I have posted a video for review. In Science we have been discussing Earth and its changes - we have also been discussing what to do if those changes happen rather quickly - like in an earthquake. For this we discussed emergency planning. I have encouraged students to discuss emergency planning with their families. Some reported that they already have. Great! I posted the videos we watched in the science videos tab. Please watch together! Lastly, students are entering the final stages of their social studies writing and we are beginning to plan for the Grade 4 store. On Monday we began prepping questions for Battle of the Books - please see pictures by clicking on the pictures tab above. Students have also been given the words for our Jeoparbee event at the end of the month. I gave students time to prepare for the event - many have chosen to group together and share their definitions. I'm quite proud of their collaboration. Way to demonstrate the 6Cs, ladies and gentlemen! Have a great weekend! - Mr. Baker - Good day everyone!
What a pleasure to have everyone back after our winter break. I can safely say that it is lovely to have a nice long winter break, but it is doubly lovely to come back to a wonderful group of hardworking students. Yes, I am talking about 4th Grade. : ) This week we started off running. In math, we began to work on double digit multiplication, refreshed our memories on median and range, and ended off the week introducing estimation. In science we began talking about land forms - what they are and how they were formed. Students started a packet which well help think think about how they read nonfiction - and especially how they find the answers they need. In social studies we began to think about the Grade 4 stores - and take what we learned in writing last term to begin writing letters to Principal Shim. Meanwhile in reading and writing we began to learn about the American Revolution. Our students are very excited to tackle this huge topic and have been introduced to a number of resources to help them in their research. You can see pictures in the picture tab! At the end of the month we will have our jeoparbee. I will be sending home the vocabulary words for students to practice from next week. In the meantime, I want students to be focused when reading and to be thinking about how they are preparing for the Battle of the Books. Also, I sent home the Battle of the Books permission slips. Please sign them and send them back ASAP. Have a great weekend!!! - Mr. Baker |
