Happy New Years to students and parents!
I hope you all enjoyed the break! Kids, I'm sure you did! Parents, they're back with me, now you have your time again! :) This week we will take time to correct our winter packet as well as introduce our work for Term 3. We will have a delectable and exciting time studying about everything from the American Revolution to the formation of rocks and minerals... but for now, enjoy your last weekend before we get back to work! Oh, and remember to please bring Battle of the Books books with you especially on Mondays! We are getting down to business! - Mr. Baker -

Hello everyone!
A short message this week to say job well done on the Winter Concert. Congratulations to both Ms. Fitz and our FP student body for pulling off one of the best winter concerts. Thank you!! Next week we will have a slightly shorter week. That is, Friday will be a half day. On Friday, we have one of my favorite ceremonies here at CDS. The Candle Lighting Ceremony. I have asked two students to represent Grade 4 on stage along with students from Grades PK - 12. Bella will be lighting the candle, while Alex will read a line from the poem The Shortest Day, by Susan Cooper. At this ceremony we will also recognize students who have thus far exemplified the best of our ESLRs, that is, they have shown greatest promise in the 6Cs. Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Curiosity, Character, Communication, and Community. On Friday, buses will depart at 11:30. There will be no lunch. Have a great weekend! Mr. Baker Don't forget: Social Studies test (provinces, cities, and resources) on Tuesday, Math test (multiplication, decimals) on Thursday. Hello everyone!
Happy Monday to you. Today we are starting our Battle of the Books lab! From today, students will be spending Monday afternoons reading their chosen Battle of the Books books. Some parents have been asking for the titles to purchase. I will post them here. Students are required to master at least two books. We only have the first five books to tell you about for now. The other five books will be announced at the end of Winter Break. For now, I would like for students to focus on mastering one book from this list, and casually reading as many as they would like. Here are the books! 1) Book Scavenger, by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman 2) An Eagle in the Snow, by Michael Morpurgo 3) Ms. Bixby's Last Day, by John David Anderson 4) Teddy Mars: Almost a World Record Breaker, by Molly B. Burnham 5) The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown You can search naver or here or here to buy. I do not recommend Amazon. As soon as we can announce the other five books, I will let you know! Mr. Baker As Term 2 nears completion, we have been working on completing our various projects. We have all begun working on our final opinion essay in writing, decimals and fractions in math, how matter changes in science, extreme weather in our nonfiction reading, as well as exploring South Korea in our social studies unit. Speaking of social studies - we will be having presentations on our created maps this coming Tuesday. Students have been instructed to present to their classmates in their groups. They will use what they learn to complete a test on the following Tuesday - December 12th. We will also have a math test on Wednesday, December 13. Details to follow. Finally, students should bring their costumes for the winter concert to school on Monday. Details below. Have a great weekend!
Hello everyone and Happy American Thanksgiving!
A short week this week. We capped it off with some turkey soup - see pictures in our photo gallery. Throughout the week we worked on a number of projects - finished up our writing, talked about prime and composite numbers in math, as well as introduced open sentences and order of operations. For some extra help, check out the order of operations video in the math videos tab. In science, we finished discussing elements and took a quiz, while in reading we went through our second round of nonfiction books and text structures. Next week, we will be working on decimals in math, our second opinion essay in writing, our developed piece in social studies, more nonfiction analysis in reading, and looking at changes in matter in science. Have a great weekend everyone! - Mr. Baker Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a great week! We certainly did in Grade 4! We have been introduced to the table of periodic elements in Science class. We are watching a great video investigating the properties of the elements throughout the next week or so that has been getting our imagination moving and our questions flowing! I do not normally do this, but I would love to suggest this book as a great coffee table book for home. I just ordered one for me, too! I ordered it here. Students do not need to have this book, I'm simply making a suggestion. But if you want to support future scientists, this book would be a great addition to the home library, and of interest to parents and kids alike. In Reading we have been busily working on identifying the text structures we began to talk about last week. Both in groups and on their own, students have been recording how text structures are used to inform readers. In Math we continue to furiously practice and quiz ourselves on multiplication while taking some time to work on division and number stories. I have added some more math videos to help with math facts in our math videos section. In Social Studies we are entering the final stage of our province project, while in Writing, we are finishing up our first opinion pieces. I hope you have a great weekend. I want to remind you of a couple of items. Next week, we will have a shorter week for the Thanksgiving break. Students are going to be dismissed early on Thursday - they will be let out of the classroom at 12:55 and the buses depart at 1. Please be prepared. Friday will be a day off as well! Enjoy! Also, I have suggested that students may bring in earbuds or headphones to use on their chromebooks for independent work. Again, it is not necessary, but they will be put to use. Nothing too expensive please - inexpensive ones are fine. Grade 4 Students and Parents,
We have had a great week of hard work. Well done class! Everyone has made progress in their multiplication math facts during Math class. We have also been investigating flight times throughout the world. In Science we continue to investigate matter and its properties leading to a project they are doing at home. The matter project is due next Tuesday. In reading we began to study different text structures that authors use when writing nonfiction. We have been reading and taking notes on a number of texts. Keep it up ladies and gentlemen! In Social Studies, students have decided to elaborate their provincial research to include popular places to visit such as museums, mountains, and amusement parks. They have been demonstrating strong teamwork skills and a genuine interest in their project. Great!! Have a great weekend!! Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a great weekend, at Songdo 7s or otherwise! It was lovely to meet those of you who were able to make it on Friday. As I stated, you are welcome to stop by anytime with any questions or concerns. Thank you!! Last week we continued our Spirit Week. Please see the photos tab for Halloween and Misfit pictures. Academically, we continued planning our opinion pieces in writing, multiplication facts quizzes have begun, and we have been adding to our science interactive notebooks. Everyone has been on task and working hard. Keep it up everyone! This coming week we will have a visit from the fire department on Tuesday. I will update you on that next week! Mr. Baker Wow, what a week! Spirit week has been a boat load of fun! Tuesday's trip to the Seoul Zoo was a great day of adventurous hiking followed by lunch and a jaunt through the zoo to see some animals. Wednesday's Pajama Day saw us studying comfortably throughout the day with our teddies and finally have a frightful afternoon with a few episode's of Goosebumps. We had some snacks, too! Thursday we should more spirit with Twin day, and finally today we really showed our stripes. Sorry. Bad joke. Anyways, check out the pictures over in our photos tab. Academically speaking, we are off to a strong start in Term 2. In Reading we began to examine our nonfiction selection by choosing and learning from books about weather. In Writing, we started our unit on opinion writing after learning about the importance of selecting a proper thesis statement. In Social Studies, we continue working on our modern day Korea maps with symbols representing crops and minerals throughout the peninsula. In Math we starting thinking about rules in algebra using in and out boxes. Finally, in Science we opened our unit on matter with some demonstrations with ice cubes and our own bodies as particles. Fun stuff! Coming up next week! Parent teacher meetings! I'm looking forward to seeing ALL of you next Friday. Click here to make an appointment with me and any other teacher you would like to speak with. I recommend that you meet with the specialists as well! The following weekend, those playing soccer will do so at the Songdo 7s! A two day tournament happening on November 4-5. Work hard players! For Spirit Week: Monday, students should wear mismatched clothes for Misfits Monday. Then the big day, Halloween! Students should dress up for the day and bring a container to collect candy. Who's excited! I'm excited!!! :) Our spirit week ends on Wednesday with Retro Uniform Wednesday, when students can wear uniforms from the past as well as soccer uniforms or shirts and bling from special days. Greetings everyone!!
I hope you all had a great week. I'm so happy that we were able to cap the week off with our assembly. Great job everyone! This week we were busy finishing off projects to end Term 1. On Thursday, we will have Twin Day - Students know their twins, but I'll list them here: For the boys: John and Alex, Yunhao and Sebin, Yejun and Joseph, Sanghyuk and Hanjoong, Kevin and Toby. For the girls: Amy and Grace, Sophia and Bella, Julie and Cailyn, On Friday, we will have Colour Day.
